Born on 16 July 1819, Michel Pacha spent his childhood lulled by tales of sailors and fishermen. He studied in Marseille to prepare for the entrance exam to the Naval School. But cholera struck Marseille in 1834, and he went to sea as a ship's boy alongside his father Antoine
